Why Fresh-Roasted Coffee Makes a Difference

Why Fresh-Roasted Coffee Makes a Difference

When you buy a bag of coffee, you probably think about the roast level, the flavor, or where the beans came from.

But there’s another question that matters just as much:

How long ago was that coffee roasted?

At LaShaw Ranch Roasters, we roast our coffee in small batches and work hard to make sure it is sold fresh,  typically within about a week of roasting.

That means when you take a bag home, you are getting coffee that has not been sitting in a warehouse, distribution center, or grocery store back room for weeks or even months.

And yes, that makes a difference.

Coffee Is Best When It’s Fresh

Coffee begins changing as soon as it is roasted.

Freshly roasted beans release gases, develop their aroma, and contain the oils and flavor compounds that give coffee its rich taste and smell. Over time, exposure to oxygen causes those qualities to slowly fade.

That does not mean coffee suddenly becomes “bad,” but it can become flatter, duller, and less aromatic the longer it sits.

This is one of the biggest differences between buying from a small-batch roaster and buying coffee from a large national brand.

Large coffee companies often have much longer supply chains.

Coffee may be roasted, packaged, shipped to a distribution center, shipped again to a retailer, stocked on a shelf, and then sit there until someone buys it.

By the time that bag makes it into your kitchen, it may have been sitting for weeks and sometimes much longer.

From Our Roaster to Your Cup

Our process is a little different.

We roast right here at LaShaw Ranch Roasters in small batches. From there, the coffee is packaged, hand-packed, and sent directly to our coffee house, wholesale customers, online customers, and other retail partners.

Because we roast regularly instead of producing huge quantities months in advance, we are able to keep our coffee moving quickly.

In many cases, the coffee you are drinking was roasted within the same week it was purchased.

That shorter trip from the roaster to your cup helps preserve the aroma, body, and flavor we worked so hard to develop during the roasting process.

Small Batch Means More Control

Freshness is not the only reason we roast in smaller batches.

Small-batch roasting gives us more control over the coffee itself.

We can pay closer attention to each roast, make adjustments when needed, and focus on consistency rather than simply producing as much coffee as possible.

For us, coffee is not just another product moving down a production line.

It is something we roast, package, serve, and drink ourselves.

We want the cup you make at home to taste the way we intended it to taste when it came out of the roaster.

Know Where Your Coffee Comes From

One of the best things about buying from a local or small-batch coffee roaster is that there is much less mystery between you and the people making your coffee.

Our roasting, packing, coffee house, and day-to-day operations all happen right here on the ranch.

There are real people behind every bag.

We roast it.

We pack it.

We ship it.

Fresh Coffee Is Worth It

You can find coffee almost anywhere.

But not every bag has taken the same journey before reaching your kitchen.

When you choose freshly roasted coffee, you are choosing a shorter supply chain, better freshness, more attention to the roasting process, and a small business that knows exactly where its coffee has been.

So the next time you pick up a bag of coffee, take a look at where it came from and think about how long it may have been sitting before it reached you.

Around here, we believe your coffee should spend less time sitting on a shelf and more time in your cup.

Freshly roasted. Small batch. Hand-packed. From our ranch to your morning.
