What Does Small-Batch Roasted Coffee Actually Mean?

You’ve probably seen the words small-batch roasted on a bag of coffee before but what does that actually mean, and does it really make a difference in your cup?

At LaShaw Ranch Roasters, small-batch roasting isn't just something we put on our packaging. It's an important part of how we produce our coffee and maintain the quality and consistency we want in every bag.

Here’s a look behind the scenes.

Why Batch Size Matters

Coffee roasting is a careful balance of time, temperature, airflow, and experience.

As green coffee beans roast, they go through a series of changes that develop the flavors and aromas you eventually taste in your cup. Even small adjustments during the roast can affect the finished coffee.

By roasting in smaller batches, we're able to pay close attention to what's happening throughout the entire roast.

Rather than focusing on producing as much coffee as possible at one time, our focus is on producing a consistent roast that we're proud to put the LaShaw Ranch Roasters name on.

Our Coffee Is Roasted 15 Pounds at a Time

Here's something many of our customers don't realize: We roast just 15 pounds of green coffee beans at a time.

That means when you see shelves filled with freshly roasted LaShaw coffee, those bags didn't all come from one enormous industrial batch.

We've roasted batch after batch, carefully working through the coffee in small quantities.

It takes more time, but it gives us greater control over the finished product.

Consistency Is the Goal

Small-batch roasting doesn't mean every batch is treated exactly the same without paying attention.

Coffee is an agricultural product. Different beans, growing regions, moisture levels and even environmental conditions can affect how coffee behaves during roasting.

That's where experience becomes important.

Our roasting process allows us to monitor each batch and make the adjustments necessary to consistently achieve the flavor profile we're looking for.

When you open a bag of your favorite LaShaw coffee, we want it to taste like the coffee you fell in love with the first time.

Freshness Matters, Too

There is another benefit to roasting coffee in smaller quantities: we're able to roast based on what we actually need.

Coffee doesn't improve by sitting around for months after it's roasted.

We'd rather continually roast fresh batches than produce massive quantities simply because we can.

It's one of the advantages of buying coffee from a small, independent roaster, you aren't just buying a bag off a shelf. You're buying coffee that's being roasted by real people, in relatively small quantities, throughout the week.

From Green Coffee to Your Morning Cup

There's a lot that happens between a green coffee bean arriving at our roastery and that first sip from your favorite mug.

Beans are selected, roasted, cooled, packaged, ground when needed, shipped or stocked, and eventually brewed in your kitchen, office, coffee stand or wherever your morning happens to take you.

We love knowing that something we roast here becomes part of someone's everyday routine.

Maybe it's the cup you drink before anyone else in the house wakes up.

Maybe it's the thermos that rides with you to work.

Maybe it's the pot brewing in the office every morning.

Or maybe it's the coffee you look forward to sitting down with when you finally get five quiet minutes.

Small Batch. Big Difference.

We're proud to do things on a smaller scale.

LaShaw Ranch Roasters was built around hard work, quality coffee and the belief that the details still matter.

Roasting 15 pounds at a time might not be the fastest way to make coffee.

But for us, that's exactly the point.

Good coffee is worth taking the time to do right.
